Learn More About Adoption....

boy girl hugging each otherLincoln, Lyon, and Murray Human Services provides adoption services to individuals and families who wish to adopt children with special needs.  These children may be older, have emotional problems, physical, or behavioral problems, be members of sibling groups, or at high risk of developing the above problems.  Services are limited to residents of Lincoln, Lyon, or Murray Counties of Minnesota.

Adoption services through Lincoln, Lyon and Murray Human Services are available to families seeking to adopt special needs children and does not include families seeking to adopt infants, children from other countries, or families involved with independent adoptions.  Families seeking these services will be referred to other appropriate agencies.

A list of agencies can be found through the web site of the Minnesota Department of Human Services.  Lincoln, Lyon, Murray Human Services does not charge a home study fee to those pursuing adoption of special needs children.  If the adopted child is eligible for Adoption Assistance, some expenses incurred, such as attorney fees and replacement birth certificate fees may be reimbursable.

Applicants wanting to adopt special needs children must participate in the home study process and the required orientation.  Adoption applicants must be over 18 and if married, must have been married at least one year.  Applicants should be in good physical and emotional health and be able to provide a secure, stable environment for children.  Applications may be denied if a person has a criminal history or a history of maltreatment to a child.  If determined to be necessary for the adoption, social worker and unit supervisor, a chemical dependency, psychological, or family dynamics assessment may be requested.  Upon completion and approval of the home study, the family will be registered on the Minnesota Adoption Exchange.  The home study must be updated annually to be valid.

The likelihood and estimated length of time for making an adoptive placement varies.  This will depend on the availability of children and special needs of the children which the family is able to accept and parent.  Completion of an adoption home study does not guarantee placement of a child.

To receive more information about the adoption program through Lincoln, Lyon, Murray Human Services, please contact the agency at 507-537-6747 or email Cindy Nelson, adoption social worker at cvn@r8nw.co.lyon.mn.us
